2023 is going to be a tough year for HGV Driver recruitment. After the traditionally tough January/February period HGV Driver facebook groups are awash with British truck drivers, most newly qualified, all looking for their first break into the transport industry.
But if training a rookie is not what you had in mind, how then, can we drill down through the inexperienced drivers, to find good experienced HGV truck drivers?
There are several ways to make the entire HGV driver recruitment process easier:
Increase pay: Yes its the most obvious choice so lets unpack this first.
One of the main reasons for the shortage of HGV drivers in the UK is that the pay is not always competitive. By increasing pay and benefits, the industry could attract more drivers.
Improve working conditions: Many HGV drivers spend long hours on the road and face challenging working conditions. By improving conditions, such as providing better rest areas and more comfortable sleeping facilities, the industry could become more appealing to potential drivers.
Offer training and support: The cost of obtaining an HGV licence and the training required can be a barrier to entry for some people. By offering training and support to those interested in becoming HGV drivers, the industry could attract more candidates.
Improve the image of the industry: HGV driving is sometimes perceived as a low-skilled job, which can deter potential candidates. By improving the image of the industry and promoting it as a skilled profession, more people may consider it as a career choice.
Utilize technology: New technologies, such as autonomous vehicles, could potentially make the job of an HGV driver easier and safer, which could appeal to more candidates.
Address lifestyle concerns: Long hours and irregular schedules can be a concern for some potential candidates. By addressing these concerns, such as by providing more predictable schedules and offering flexible working options, the industry could become more appealing to a wider range of candidates.
All easier said than done, but by addressing at least SOME these factors, the HGV driver recruitment process could be made easier and the industry could attract more drivers.
